what does it mean to be non-binary?
Non-binary is just one term used to describe individuals who may experience a gender identity that is neither exclusively male or female or is in between, or beyond
both genders

this is the non-binary flag. the yellow stripe represents people whose gender exists outside of the binary, the white stripe, people with many or all genders, the purple, people with genders considered a mix of male and female, and the black people who identify as not having a gender.

When I was fourteen, one of my friends came out as non-binary. It was the first time I had heard of such a thing and I was not prepared to have a conversation about it. I just could not stop thinking about it. It had become one of those moments when there was a before and an after, before I knew what non-binary was, and after.
